In order to open the Toyota key fob you will first need to remove the fob from the key ring it is attached to. This particular key fob was from a 2003 Toyota 4Runner and has an unlock button, lock button, and a button to lower the rear window of the lift gate or trunk door.

Remove Key Fob Battery
Once you have separated the keyless entry remote be careful that the buttons do not fall out as there is nothing hold the insides of the fob together.

At this point you can see the CR2016 or CR2032 coin battery that needs to be replaced. Depending on your year and model you may have the newer CR2032 style battery. What is the difference between the two batteries? The replacement CR2032 is twice as thick as the CR2016 and it holds a charge longer, both batteries have the same diameter.

You may use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry out the dead key fob battery.

To close the key fob leave the half with the buttons and battery facing down and place the backside of the key fob over it and line up the two halves. If you pick up both pieces and try to put them together you may drop insides of the key fob out.

Snap the two pieces of the key fob together and test the buttons to make sure they are working.

If the Toyota key fob is still not working after you replaced the battery you may need to reprogram it to the vehicle or if you purchased a new Toyota key fob it will also need to be programmed to your Toyota. Please see the page for Instructions on How To Reprogram a Toyota Key Fob. Also see Toyota Camry Repair and Maintenance Guides and Toyota 4Runner Maintenance and Repair Guides for additional how to guides. If you are not comfortable reprogramming your key fob you will need to take it to the dealership for reprogramming.
