Has your BMW key fob stopped working? Do you have a low battery warning light symbol or "remote control battery discharged"? If so you may need to replace the dead battery in the key fob in order for it to start working again. The BMW keyless entry remote will not function unless it has a fully charged new battery and you may not be able to unlock, lock, or open your trunk wirelessly until you install a new battery in the BMW key fob with comfort access. If you have a BMW equipped with comfort access and you do not need to insert the key fob into the vehicle in order to start the BMW then you can change the old battery out with a new CR2032 Coin Battery in just a few easy steps.

This how to replace the battery in a BMW key fob guide was specifically written for vehicles with the comfort access that allows you to start the car with the start/stop button without inserting the key. This guide may be helpful to owners of the 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 BMW 1 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, I3, X1, X3, X5, X6, Z4, M3, M5 and M6. Read disclaimer.

Tools Needed: CR2032 Battery, Flathead Screwdriver

Note: If you do not have comfort access you may have a rechargeable battery in your key remote that can not be replaced and you may need to buy a new BMW key fob and have it programmed to your vehicle. You can purchase a new OEM BMW key fob from the dealership that is specific to your VIN number and then have the dealer cut a new spare/valet key for your vehicle.

If you bought a new remote for an older model BMW that has the diamond shaped key fob that is attached to the top of your ignition key you may be able to reprogram it or program it to your BMW your self by following instructions available on the internet.

The BMW keyless entry remote replacement battery CR2032 can be purchased on Amazon or at any auto parts store or convenient store for less that $5 for a pair. After you have inserted the new battery in the key fob with the positive side up you can push the plastic battery cover back into place and test your remote to make sure it is working.

Troubleshooting: If the key fob is not working after the battery has been replaced try inserting it into the ignition for 20 seconds, this may synch the key fob to the BMW again. You may also need to have your spare working key fob in the vehicle at the same time in order for it to synch. (Please do not quote me on this synching method as I read it somewhere else and it would only work with a key fob that is matched to your VIN number already) If the key fob is still not working make sure you do not need to replace or fix a blown fuse or relay somewhere or that you did not put the battery in upside down.

The CR2032 Coin Battery is made by Energizer, Duracell, Panasonic, Maxell, Sony and Philips and can be purchased at Discount Auto Parts, Advanced Auto Parts, Pep Boys, Napa, Walmart, CVS, Wallgreens, Target and other retail stores.
